Woo hoo!

Okay, I don’t have anything to say.

I’m still reading the same book/books. Nothing big is going on TV-wise.  Hey! I do have a ticket for Watchmen tomorrow morning.  I’ve known about the graphic novel for years, but have never read it. I’ve been studiously avoiding it until after I saw the movie. 

I have a rule about these things:

Don’t read the book before seeing the movie.  The movie is never as complete / complex as the book.  If I read the book first, I’m inevitably disappointed that some scene or subplot is missing from the movie. By seeing the  movie first, I enjoy it as it is, then I can read the book and fill in the gaps.

American Idol’s non-twist March 12, 2009

Okay, I’ve got one more word on American Idol today, and then I’ll shut up about it.

This new “twist”, where the judges can “save” one contestant once during the show’s run with a unanimous vote is a yawner.

First of all, they can only do it once, so they’re going to think really hard before upsetting the apple cart. For instance, I don’t think Jasmine deserved to go last night but they let it happen anyway.

Second of all, there have been seasons with multiple upsets.  In fact, I predict that there will be a second upset this year after the judges finally do exercise their new prerogative.

If the producers really wanted to make a change, they should let the judges do this at any time, with the proviso that no contestant can be saved more than once.  That would give the judges the flexibility right any wrong they see, rather than worrying whether the current upset will be the biggest or not.

Not that that’s going to happen. After all, American Idol’s not about picking the best singer or performer; it’s about making a big, fat pile of money for the producers.

Then again, I look forward to the show every year. They must be doing something right.

I’m back February 13, 2009

I’m back from my long hiatus. I have no (reasonable) excuse, other than my department was put up for sale, and let’s just say that I was preoccupied for a while.

That’s been settled now. I’m firmly planted in a new company, created by a group of investors that like what we do enough to give us our own “home”.

The “resolution” for 2009 is to post here at least once a day. We’ll see. I’m really not a fan of resolutions. I figure, if you want to change some part of your life, just do it. Don’t wait for some arbitrary date. We’ll see if my good intentions actually bear fruit…
